Book Review: Across the Universe by Beth Revis

A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.
Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone - one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship - tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.
Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

“Across the Universe” by Beth Revis was amazing. I was not expecting to love this novel as much as I did. The characters were great and I love the dual point of view. I actually think that the dual point of view was my absolute favorite part. I liked getting to know the two main characters through their point of views.

I absolutely love Amy. I think she is a great female lead character. In the beginning all of Amy’s parts where her thoughts as she was sleeping in her frozen case. It really lets the reader get to know her since the readers are getting a peek inside Amy’s mind. Amy is woken up early and she doesn’t know what to do since her parents are still frozen. Amy spends her time trying to figure out who woke her up early and why. Is there a way she can save others from having the same experience as her?

I would have to say that Elder’s inner battle is definitely interesting to listen too. Elder goes back and forth about whether he wants to make his own choice or follow Eldest. Elder has his own secrets that he is trying to keep safe even though he is trying to figure out everyone else’s secrets. Elder is going to become leader of “Godspeed,” the spaceship that the people are traveling on, including those that are frozen. Right now Elder is going through the training process to become a great leader and to learn how to control the ship.

Harvey was amazing. I love how eccentric he is. His art side is great and he is such a unique character and I love it. Harvey has a sad story since he lost the love of his life and he is trying to survive. I think Amy and Elder have a wonderful friend in Harvey. I would have to say that a lot of my favorites parts involved Harvey and his fun personality.

“Across the Universe” had some slow parts but I was definitely hooked within the first few chapters that I wanted to keep on listening to the story. Oh yeah, I was listening to an unabridged audiobook version of the novel. I really liked the man and woman that were narrating for the characters. I think they were great choices. I really liked the story line of “Across the Universe.” I am very curious to see what happens in book two.

I give "Across the Universe" four out of five bookshelves.
