Interview with Cindy Ray Hale

Ali: What inspiration did the characters of Les Misérables give you to write the Destiny trilogy?

Cindy: I was first inspired by Eponine and her story of courage and love even though she knew it would be unrequited. She helped Marius find Cosette even though it hurt her. I've spent some time pondering that. The only thing I could come up with was that Eponine loved Marius so much that she wanted to do even something that would her her to see him happy. That kind of pure love is extremely inspiring to me and I brought it back hints of it in Sychrony, not through Destiny, but through Isaac.

Ali:What was the deciding factor to self-publish your novels and novella?

Cindy: I read a lot of articles about self publishing and I was very impressed with the potential for growth and the freedom the authors have to choose their own covers and editors. Sometimes I pick up books published by small presses and their covers look cheaply made and they're still full of errors and poorly structured sentences. I like the control that I have over the way my books are put together, not to mention the royalties I receive and the ability to set my own price on my books.

Ali:  Do you already have a project in mind after the Destiny trilogy?

Cindy: Yes. Despite everything I just said about self-publishing, I still see great value in traditional publishing. I would like to put together some manuscripts to send out to agents to land a deal with a traditional publishing company, specifically Harlequin Heartwarming because it's clean romance and I'm a big advocate of promoting clean books.

Ali: What is your favorite part about writing young adult novels?

Cindy: Getting into the mindset of a teen and feeling like I'm that age again. Teens feel everything so much stronger than adults do because their bodies are still growing and adjusting to their raging hormones. Whenever I get into my "writing mode" I feel like I'm actually fifteen again, and that feeling is very liberating.

Ali: If you could write a story with anyone (dead or alive), who would you chose?

Cindy: Probably Rachel Harris. I feel like our writing style is similar enough that we could blend our writing well enough to seem seamless. Also, she's super on track and motivated, and she knows what she's doing. Rachel has this energy that's contagious and I would want some of that to rub off on me.
