Book Review: The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd

"The Madman's Daughter" by Megan Shepherd is based off of the psychological thriller "The Island of Dr. Moreau." This novel is told through the thought, feelings, and eyes of Dr. Moreau's daughter Juliet. The way Shepherd writes the story, she brings more perspective and insight to the traditional story of "The Island of Dr. Moreau." The reader gets to learn a whole new view of the mosterious and intersting creatures that Dr. Moreau creates.

"The Madman's Daughter" starts off really good. I feel like the story slowing starts to take a turn, not neccesarily for the worse, but it is more like it begins to drag on and on. Juliet's father, who was previously persumed dead, ended up fleaing to an island that was out of the country leaving Juliet and her mother to take care of themselves. When her mother dies, Juliet ends up working as part of a janitorial staff for a medical school that one of her father's colleages got for her. Juliet happens to run into some medical students that are performing a surgery based off of oen of ther father's papers. Juliet decides to investigate to see what is going on. Maybe her father is alive?

Juliet then finds Montogmery, the servant boy that she grew up with that disappeared around the time that her father did. Montogmery explains to Juliet that he ended up leaving with her fathe rand they have been living on an island ever since. Juliet finding out that her father is alive insists on going with him to this island. On there way to the island they find a man dying on a boat, so they decide to bring him aboad and take him with them to the island. The boy's name is Edward and after her father threatens him, Edward seems to stay pretty close to the island compound. Then on top of the Juliet's father is not insistent on trying to pair Edward and Juliet together.

As the story goes on the reader finds out little by little what is really going on in this isolated island. Creatures are dying and no one seems to know what monster is going around killing them. Bodies are just piling up and Juliet wants to know who could be killing so many creatures. I was very intrigued by the story and I plan on continuing the series to see what ends up happening to Juliet. Since this is a debut novel for Shepherd, I am curious to see how her writing will imporve. I don't think this is a bad story at all. I liked the story a lot, it was jsut really slow paced. Hopefully the writing improves. If you are one that is in to creepy stories defintiely check this one out.
