Burn Blog Tour: Interview with Elissa Sussman and Giveaway

Ali: Hello Elissa. Thank you so much for stopping by today. We are so excited to have you here on Dazzled by Books. I wanted to kick off with asking you, what was the deciding factor on doing companion novels?

Elissa: I always imagined doing the series this way – having new protagonists for each book gives me the opportunity to view this world from all sorts of different perspectives. Because while each story is, in a sense, self-contained, there is also a larger story that will unravel over the rest of the series.

A: Do you have a favorite character you love to write?

E: Rhys is definitely a favorite of mine. He’s kind of cocky and self-assured, but he’s also really sweet and gentle, especially with his friends. It says a lot about him (and Elanor) that they’re such good friends because they are so different. They’re especially fun to write together.

A: Why fairy-tales?

E: I’ve always loved fairy tales. There’s something really fun about playing with stories that lend themselves so well to new interpretations. No one looks at the same fairy tale in the exact same way and I love that.

A: I have to agree. Everyone looks at a fairy tale differently. I think that is why I love fairy tales and fairy tale retellings so much. Has anyone or anything influenced your writing?

E: Patricia C. Wrede’s ENCHANTED FOREST CHRONICLES was my favorite series when I was a teenager and though my storytelling style is the complete opposite of hers, she is a huge influence on the kind of stories I want to tell. I also really love Margaret Atwood and Aimee Bender, both of whom weave fairy tale stories or imagery throughout their fiction.

A: If you were to sell Burn to someone that has read Stray in 10 words or less, where would you start?

E: A badass Snow White confronts an emotionally abusive Wicked Queen

A: Disney Villain or Disney Princess?

E: Ooo. That’s a hard one. I might have to say Disney Sidekick, because the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella is what inspired this entire series.

A: Has working with animation helped with your writing at all?

E: It made me more disciplined. Since I didn’t do anything on the creative side when I worked in animation, it gave me experience in how to manage and schedule artists, so when it came to my own art, I had a sense of how to keep myself on track.

A: Thank you so much for stopping by Elissa. We hope to have you again soon!
