"Wink Poppy Midnight" by April Genevieve Tucholke is written so beautifully. I can't even begin to tell you what I was really reading but I can tell you that it sounded amazing. I feel like the story had a poem like quality to it. I feel like the story jumped all over the place. I think that is what is supposed to be the mystery of the story. This novel has a little bit of everything in it. There is mystery, romance, suspense, confusion, and lots of beautiful writing.
This entire story is written in a series of metaphors which makes the book sound beautiful but it also confused me a lot as the reader. The first half of the story is all about Midnight comparing Wink and Poppy. Midnight has a crush on both of these girls and he is trying to figure out who he wants. Wink is the weird mystical story like girl and Poppy is a beautiful and very cold bully.
This book is very strange. It will be a book that you definitely think "Do I really understand what I just read?" Which I don't feel like this is a bad question at all. It really gets the reader thinking about things and trying to understand it all. Tucholke's books are definitely an experience. I think it is a great experience just very puzzling at times.
Having a story that is told from three different characters first point of view, you would think that I would end up liking at least one character and I didn't like any of them. I felt like the characters were very flat in a way. You could see the main side of them that the author wanted you to see but they weren't brought to life for me. They didn't seem real at all. This will definitely be a book that readers are really going to love or they are really going to hate it. I am not sure there is going to be much of an in between on this one just because it is so different.
I do think this book is worth the experience of reading it. Like I said it is written very beautifully. Just be prepared for all the confusion to follow because nothing seems to really make sense or add up in the way that it should.
