Dazzled by Books

I liked "Air Awakens" and I thought Kova did an even better job with "Fire Falling," but what happened with "Earth's End?"

I am going to share what I liked and what I didn't like and then go from there.

What I liked:

• The book started out super strong. "Fire Falling" ended on a cliff hanger, so it was nice that the reader was able to find out information right away.


• Vhalla's character growth was great. I think that Vhalla is growing with each book. Her personality is expanding and she is learning new things about herself. Vhalla has grown so much since book one and I think that Kova does a great job developing her along the way.


• The magic is great. I think it is fun to see what Kova comes up with for each character. I love that the magic grows with the character. It is like the magic is it's own character in a sense with how it develops.


• I really liked the focus on how brainy Vhalla is. We finally get to have her share her knowledge and show that she is smart. When she put the warlords in their place, I loved it.

What I didn't like:

• The romance. I feel like the romance is all over the place. The romance that is presented to the reader is not a very healthy romance at all. I think Aldrik becomes way too needy that I don't really like him as a character anymore. It seemed like Aldrik's relationship with Vhalla just took over his life and he was no longer his own person and I really didn't like this at all. I think that the romance could have been done much better.


• Aldrick's ending. I don't want to spoil anything but I am really upset for Kova to spend so much time on this needy romance for all of the sudden Aldrick is shaming Vhalla. Really what purpose did that have? I can maybe understand if we are going down the "trying to protect her" road...well I would say she has magic on her side. She will be fine. I don't understand going from all the neediness to shaming her.

Wrap Up

Unfortunately there was no saving this for me. The two big complaints I had took up the majority of the book. I wish this focused more on the war and battle and less on the romance. This is not the romance I would want nor am I interested in reading about it. I don't know if I want to continue the books or not. There is supposed to be a total of five books I believe. Well right now I am stuck at book three. It failed to be impressive to me. "Fire Falling" did not suffer from second book syndrome but I think "Earth's End" did fail at it.

I haven't completely decided what to do. I may continue, I may not. I think only time will tell at this point. I still love the first two books. Maybe I will stick to my opinion of those two books and continue on just to see what happens. The next book could redeem the quality of this one.

Kova's writing was great in the first two books. I think it started to go down hill with this one. The writing wasn't terrible, it was the content that I disliked. I still like Kova as a writer. We will see what happens next.
