Spindle Fire by Lexa Hillyer

Spindle Fire by Lexa Hillyer is a lot different than I was expecting. I really enjoyed it. This story is mostly a retelling of Sleeping Beauty but there is a bit of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland mixed in too. I was surprise to find that a good check on this book takes place with the faeries.

Isabelle and Aurora are half sisters. Poor Isabelle is an illegitimate child of the King's and so she isn't treated very well. Her sight was taken by the fairies as payment for a change in Aurora's curse. Aurora has lost her voice and sense of touch. These poor girls have had their lives messed with so much by the fairies. The two have found a way to communicate with each other and become close over the years. They are still very different because one day Aurora will be taking over the kingdom.

Once Aurora pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep that only a kiss from her true love will be able to awaken her. Isabelle ran away but once she found out about her sister, she decided that she is going to try to save her sister. I really enjoyed the bond that these two sisters have and how the interact with each other.

I am not totally sure that I like Aurora yet but I do really like Isabelle. Isabelle is such a great character and I enjoyed reading about how she becomes into her own. Book two is definitely on my list to find out more about Isabelle and her adventures. Aurora annoyed me a lot. Even though she didn't have a sense of touch or a voice, she seemed to be treated so much better than Isabelle and she took it for granted. I wanted this girl to take more control of her life.

I did listen to the audio-book for this book and really enjoyed it. I thought the narrator did a great job with reading the book. I was really surprised by this book and really glad that I took a chance on reading it. Can't wait until book two!
