Review:

Before the Broken Star by Emily R. King is fantastic. If you have not read an Emily R. King book yet, then you are missing out. I absolutely adored The Hundredth Queen series. I was super excited to dive right into Before the Broken Star.

Everley Donovan lost everything when she was only seven years old. Ten years later Everley sees the man that murdered her family show up at her place of work. Thought she was not recognized, it stirred something in Everley. She needed to complete her task for revenge. The first thing you notice about Everley is she comes across as very timid. I started to think whether or not this girl was actually going to be able to follow through on her revenge plan. Though she may be timid, she is definitely determined. I love how she seemed to grow with each passing chapter.

When Everley pleads guilty to crimes that she did not commit, she is sent to the penal colony. This colony is where the woman are partnered with the men and are married to expand the queen’s kingdom. Before they reach the colony, any man working on the ship has an option to marry a woman and stay at the colony. Everley ends up catching the eye of the doctor who would like to marry her but then the Lieutenant jumps in because he promised her uncle to look after her.

Now being thrown into a marriage she doesn’t want, Everley has to figure out how to carry out her revenge without telling her new husband what she is up too. On this journey, Everley starts to make friends even though she tries her hardest to stay away from everyone.

I really liked Before the Broken Star. I really enjoyed Everley’s growth in the story. King really knows how to draw a reader in and get them hooked. This story was so enjoyable to read. I read the entire thing in a few short days. King really makes you have that “Seriously?!” moment. I can’t believe I have to wait for the next book because I really want it right now. King is such a great writer. I think anyone would enjoy her books because they are so fun and the characters are so easy to like. She just has a special way about her writing.
