The Monster and the Last Blood Match By K.A. Linde

Before Wren in the Holly Library, there was The Monster and the Last Blood Match―the enthralling beginning to a world of passion, power, and secrets. When a human ventures into the world of vampires, she discovers that not all is what it seems.

For Reyna Carpenter, giving up her body isn’t a choice―it’s survival.
In a world where humans are currency and vampires rule from the shadows, Reyna accepts a high-paying position among the wealthy and ruthless elite. Her new job: a live-in blood escort for the enigmatic and dangerously powerful Beckham Anderson. She expects cruelty. She expects hunger. She expects to become his next meal.

But Beckham won’t drink from her.

He keeps his distance, his unreadable gaze shadowed by something far more dangerous than just desire. As the nights pass, Reyna begins to sense it―an invisible war being waged around her, secrets that twist through the corridors of Visage, and whispers of something far more valuable than power.

Because Reyna isn’t just rare―she’s the key to something bigger than she ever imagined. And the reason Beckham refuses to taste her blood?

It might not just change them―it might destroy everything.

Review:

The Monster and the Last Blood Match by K.A. Linde is extremely addicting. I went into this novel completely blind. I hadn’t even read a synopsis of it. I really enjoyed The Wren and the Holly Library and saw that the tagline for this novel was “Before Wren in the Holly Library, there was The Monster and the Last Blood Match”, so I knew that I needed to read this story ASAP.

The interactions between Reyna and Beckham captured my attention and would not let me go. I thought the concept of this book such a unique idea. I wanted to know so much more about this world. Vampires have to drink the same blood as their blood type in order to avoid becoming a feral monster. Visage, a powerful, vampire-run corporation that manages “blood escort” services is trialing a new program where they pair a human with a vampire of the same blood type as a permanent placement. This is so vampires can have an in-home food source to keep them civilized..but this program is also harboring a bigger secret project.

Harrington, the CEO of Visage is dying and he is looking for his specific blood match. Harrington has a very rare blood type. Beckham is one of Harrington’s VPs and he is one of the vampires participating in the trial blood program. Reyna gets placed in Beckham’s household for this program. Beckham refuses to drink from Reyna and he actually wants very little to do with her in general.

Reyna is given a black card which is unusual for a blood escort, but Beckham is trying to make sure Reyna wants for nothing. Even though Beckham is providing elegant clothes, food, and shoes to Reyna; he is very controlling so Reyna doesn’t have much freedom which is all she truly craves.

I completed this book in a single day and all I wanted was more. I enjoyed being in the world of vampires again, plus being in a dystopian world as well. I really liked the banter between Beckham and Reyna but wasn’t a fan of how toxic their relationship was. I love a good touch her and die trope, but I hate when you also make them fee like crap. Overall I thought the book was great.

I did o a dual read and listen. I want to make a quick note about the audiobook. The narrator did a fantastic job. I really enjoyed the audiobook as well.
