The Verdant Cage by Jess Lourey

The Wall was built to keep them safe. Or so they thought.

For as long as seventeen-year-old apothecary Rose Allgood can remember, the towering stone Wall surrounding Noah's Valley has protected her people. No one leaves. No one fights. And no one questions why.

But their paradise has been hiding its thorns. When Rose's mother becomes the Valley's first murder victim and her twin brother is swiftly condemned, she alone is searching for the real killer.

Determined to find the truth, she follows a trail of hidden messages, forbidden knowledge, and whispers of a past no one dares to remember.

The deeper she digs, the more certain Rose becomes that her mother's death was no accident.

That the Wall isn't just keeping something out.

It's keeping something in.

Fans of The Hunger Games, The Grace Year, and The Maze Runner will devour The Verdant Cage-a chilling dystopian thriller about what it takes to rebel when you discover your entire world is a lie.

Book Review:

Verdant Cage was an interesting return to the dystopian genre for me, and it definitely stands out as something different. The world Lourey creates immediately reminded me of elements from Fallout and Silo (Wool), a society living within a confined structure, fully aware of the Wall that surrounds them. Even the greeting “Within the Wall” gave me Handmaid’s Tale vibes. Children are born into families with predetermined roles, and marriages are assigned, with spouses moving into whichever household has fewer members. It’s a system that feels part Handmaid’s Tale, part Divergent.

Our main character, Rose, is born into the Apothecary household. She’s assigned to marry Gryphon, an only child from one of the five guardian families. Because of this, Rose must leave her apothecary roots behind and join the guardians. But on her wedding day, tragedy strikes and her mother is murdered, and her twin brother Jonas is framed and sent over the Wall as punishment. With no heirs left to continue the apothecary line, Rose becomes determined to uncover the truth. Her search leads her deep into the secrets of life within the Wall, revealing far more than she ever expected.

I’ll be honest: I struggled with many of the characters, and at times I considered setting the book aside. I ultimately kept going because Mayhem Books kindly sent me an ARC and because I wanted to see if my theory about the plot was correct (it was). While the execution didn’t always land for me, the concept itself is intriguing, and I’m curious whether the author plans to continue the story in a sequel.

Overall, The Verdant Cage was an okay read for me. If a sequel comes out, there’s about a 50/50 chance I’d pick it up, depending on where the story goes next.

And just to note: any comparisons I’ve made to other books or shows are purely for fun. This story has its own unique ideas and I just enjoy spotting possible inspirations.
