Trust Me, I’m Lying by Mary Elizabeth Summer

NEVER JUDGE A CROOK BY HER COVER.

Julep Dupree tells lies. A lot of them. She's a con artist, a master of disguise, and a sophomore at Chicago's swanky St. Agatha High, where her father, an old-school grifter with a weakness for the ponies, sends her so she can learn to mingle with the upper crust. For extra spending money Julep runs petty scams for her classmates while dodging the dean of students and maintaining an A+ (okay, A-) average.

But when she comes home one day to a ransacked apartment and her father gone, Julep's carefully laid plans for an expenses-paid golden ticket to Yale start to unravel. Even with help from St.

Agatha's resident Prince Charming, Tyler Richland, and her loyal hacker, Sam, Julep struggles to trace her dad's trail of clues through a maze of creepy stalkers, hit attempts, family secrets, and worse, the threat of foster care. With everything she has at stake, Julep's in way over her head... but that's not going to stop her from using every grift in the book to save her dad before his mark finds her.

Book Review:

Trust Me, I’m Lying by Mary Elizabeth Summer has been a longtime favorite of mine, and revisiting it through the new audiobook was an absolute delight. Julep Dupree, a high‑school grifter with a talent for bending the truth, remains as compelling as ever. When her father disappears, she’s determined to uncover what happened, no matter how far over her head she ends up. She’s stubborn, resourceful, and wonderfully flawed, and it’s impossible not to root for her as she navigates danger, deception, and her own mistakes.

Experiencing the story in audio form gave me a fresh appreciation for Summer’s sharp writing and Julep’s distinct voice. The plot moves quickly, keeping the tension high and the pages…well, minutes flying by. I found myself fully absorbed all over again.

Elena Anderson’s narration is a standout. She captures Julep’s personality and the story’s pacing with ease, making it effortless to stay engaged. I sincerely hope she continues narrating the rest of the series.

If you enjoy The Gallagher Girls by Ally Carter or shows like Veronica Mars and Leverage, this series is absolutely worth your time.
