Book Review:

Arcana Academy is an addictive, richly imagined fantasy that delivers complexity, intrigue, and a heroine who refuses to be anything but formidable. Elise Kova opens the novel with Clara in prison, desperate for escape, only to be offered an unexpected bargain by Prince Kaelis. Her reluctant acceptance thrusts her into the elite Arcana Academy—where she must pose as Kaelis’ future bride while navigating a world built on the inking, reading, and wielding of tarot‑based magic.

The magic system is one of the novel’s standout features: intricate, layered, and impressively constructed. At times, the sheer volume of world-building results in heavy information dumps, making the opening feel slow. But once the story finds its rhythm, the payoff is worth it.

Clara herself is a compelling protagonist—stubborn, bold, brash, ambitious, and fiercely loyal. Her competence is refreshing, even as her cockiness and trust issues complicate her path. Prince Kaelis, meanwhile, is the quintessential morally grey academic‑prince: cold, calculating, brooding, and secretly soft‑hearted. Their dynamic leans more toward distaste‑to‑lovers than true enemies‑to‑lovers, but the slow burn is deliciously tense. He absolutely falls first.

The pacing occasionally stumbles, especially in the romance, but the tension and yearning more than compensate. And yes…Kaelis’ cat, Priss, steals every scene she’s in.

Overall, Arcana Academy is a fun, intelligent fantasy with addictive momentum and a magic system that rewards attention. I’m already eager for book two.
