Eve by Anna Carey is a very interesting tale. Eve is a young girl that has grown up in a place called school. This school was made up of all girls, all of which were orphans. Eve starts out the day before the girls are supposed to graduate school. After graduating the girls go to a different side of the property where they are to begin a trade. Once they finish learning this trade, which is usually around four years, they move to Sand City. When the main character Eve sees one of the girls trying to escape, Arden, she tries to find out why. That night Eve decides to see for herself if Arden is right. When Eve learns the truth about the school, one of her school teachers helps her escape.

This book is about Eve trying to get to a safe place called Califia. Eve ends up meeting up with Arden and a boy named Caleb. At this point of time, Eve still believe the things that she learned in the school; the girls were taught that boys were bad, that all they wanted to do was harm girls. It took awhile for Eve to warm up to Caleb. Ultimately, Caleb would keep Eve safe.

The Characters:

Eve! There are so many things to say about Eve. Eve grew up in the school for the majority of her life, she is obedient and trusting. In her eyes, there was no reason for her not to trust the people at the school. Once Eve was all alone out in the moods, she became a very scared and frightened little girl. She wasn’t used to the big open space and the unknown; she just knew that she needed to run for her life. Eve is a very genuine character; there is so much depth to her.

Arden! I liked Arden a lot. She is spunky and brave. I see some sarcastic sides to her too, which is probably why I like her so much. I think Arden is wonderful. Arden feels like she is all alone in the world and in the end she realizes that she isn’t, there are people that love her.

Caleb! He is the male interest in this story. He laughs at Eve in the beginning because she thinks that he just wants to have intercourse with her because that is what she learned in school. Boys only want to have intercourse with the girls. It took awhile for Eve to warn up to Caleb, but once she did, she fell in love and he fell in love with her too. When Caleb leaves Eve in a dispute, she doesn’t see him again until she most needs it when she is on the run. Caleb is an orphan just like Eve. He grew up in a camp, which is kind of like a school but a camp is made up of all boys and they do manual labor instead of learning school studies. I look at Caleb as being a protector, because he protects Eve and he protects the younger orphan boys that have escaped from the camps too.

Plot and Everything Else:

The characters where fantastic, however the rest of the story was slightly disappointing. I think the substance of the story was good. I think Anna Carey had a great idea; however I don’t think it was portrayed very well. I was bored a lot reading Eve. There would be certain moments that would catch my interest, but my attention would hold for very long. I think they book became better as I neared the end. Good news is I am interested enough in the story that I do want to continue the series, so I didn’t hate the book. I think there is a lot of growing room for Anna Carey’s writing, which I think is a good thing.

I did like Eve; I don’t want to give the impression that I didn’t. I just think that it could have been better. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how Eve’s story continues in Once.

I give "Eve" three out of five bookshelves.

  1. The characters are definitely fantastic! Eve's growth throughout this book and the rest of the series is probably my favorite part.
