Review:
Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor is amazing. When Sunny's family moved away from the United States to their native Nigeria, she was nine years old. Now 12 year old Sunny is an outsider among her classmates. Sunny is constantly bullied by other kids because of the fact that she was born in America and she is an albino. When Sunny sees a vision of the world's future, she learns that she is a Leopard, or a person that has magical abilities. This starts Sunny's journey and the reader is in for an incredible ride.
I really liked the opening first pages of this book where there is talk about candles. I love candles. I really felt that right away I was going to love Sunny. Sunny is one of those characters that you don't have to worry about because you know she is going to overcome anything that is thrown her way. Once Sunny discovers that she has magical abilities she begins to see another part of her world. This is this entire community and place that she was unaware of before. I can't express enough how much I really enjoyed Sunny's journey of self discovery.
Okorafor's wiritng is amazing. I found that I was really enjoying the story, plot, and characters. There are so many diverse people and thoughts in this book that I really enjoyed getting to know everyone in this story. I have to say my biggest complaint with this story is I feel like the ending was rushed. Which I am lucky enough to have book two to read but I think the ending could have used more care. This is definitely a book you should read. The sequel is coming out in October.
